Which post protien skimmers don't work on freshtanks because the surface tension isn't as high there are alternative ways to remove protien but these won't increase filtration at all or decrease watter changes(bubbles, powerhead, hydor biowheel), just increase oxyegenation of the watter, it should only be a consideration on way overstocked tanks which you should avoid anyways

I agree, they don't do much on freshwater tanks.

Nothing can take the place of fresh water in the tank - no equipment, no media, and no additives will do the same thing.

Skimmers designed for use in freshwater which do actually work are now available but are unsuitable for most home aquariums due to the volumes of water they are designed to work with, the smallest model i'm aware of is designed to work on tanks of 500 litres which is roughly 125 gallons. They are also quite expensive with the smallest model retailing at several hundred pounds making them uneconomical compared to water changes which are relatively free.
