Is a 10-gallon tank large enough for a male gold dust-sailfin molly by himself? I've read a wide variety of recommended sizes on the internet.

EDIT: Alright, not the clearest question. I understand the 'one inch of fish/gallon' except for goldfish and in words like neighbor and weigh stuff; is a sailfin in the goldfish-exception category in that it requires more than the typical one gallon/inch? Although not schooling, are they social enough that being alone in a small tank will cause them to not eat, etc.?

10 gallon's would be to small, these fish love large open water tanks.

Mine are all very active, they like to swim all over the tank. It's 22 gallons and personally I still think it's a bit too small for them. I'd vote 20 gals minimum, 25-30 preferred. Platys or smaller mollies in a 10 gal would be fine.

Thanks for the advice. I was kind of afraid I'd need a larger tank. Thankfully, I found someone local with a relatively inexpensive 55-gallon that I'm going to have a look at and probably buy. I'm thinking of putting a divider in it with about 2/3 reserved for males (once the fry my female dropped on Christmas get bigger) and about 1/3 for females. I had to move the male sailfin because he was chasing the female that dropped fry so much that she hadn't eaten for a couple of days. Now that I've moved the male sailfin he's not eating and one of my females is endlessly nipping my red cap oranda's fins so i'm going to have to separate everyone somehow. Whew!
