This might sound a like a nub question by what is the best position of the heater in my tank? I have been told that next to the intake is good as it allows proper distribution.

I also hear that the roots like to be warm so I figured if the heater was horizontal on the bottom of the tank it would allow for warm water to penetrate the gravel more easily to warm the roots?

P.S.
I have four thermometers in the tank with each one being in the front corners. The bottom two each display a temp read that is 1.5degrees celcious lower than the top. I was thinking of just buying cable heaters and doing the heated gravel thing, but has anyone had experience upgrading to this during an already setup tank? I am using 15.4lbs flourite mixed with 15lbs of tiny gravel. I would add another 10lbs of tiny gravel to make it a total of 40.4lbs.

Thanks

Heat rises, so I put my heater at the bottom near the substrate. I have also heard that it helps the plants so I guess it's true.

PM gf225, he uses one in his 33G planted tank and he really advocates the use of heater cables...
