When I got up this morning one of my new guppys had died and was laying on the bottom of the tank (he was the one I posted about on thursday/friday as he had a split tail). Ive just looked at my fish now and noticed one guppy is swimming with his back end a lot lower than the others, when he turned slightly he looks like hes got a patch on his side that looks like cotton wool but he also has a lot of reddening around it, not sure if he has been fighting in there and its got infected.

What should I buy to treat it?
The tank currently has 2 red platys, 4 tetra, and 4 guppys plus a load of fry which havent been eaten yet/some still in hatchery box)

You have bacterial infections in your tank.
What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Myxazin and pimafix.
Increase aeration in the tank.
Good luck.

just doing tests, ammonia is high, thats already changing colour in the tube, just waiting on the others

can these treatments be used with fry?

ammonia seems to giving a positive reading (1-2), nitrite is 0, nitrate is 5, ph is 6.5. just about to do a water change

Is this ammonia reading before you added the med.
Fry are ok with bacterial meds as long as you increase aeration in the tank, its more the parasite meds.

I havent got any meds here, gonna have to get them tomorrow, think my guppy is gonna die overnight though as he is hiding in the corner of my tank with fast breathing. main problem I will have 2moro is its gonna take me another 15 hours to get the meds and come home to give them.

Immediate water change and post water stats please.

just done a water change of about 30-50% (was 12.5 litres but i dont think my tank holds the full 38 that it says)

new stats will be here shortly

How many gallons or litres is the tank,.
How many fry as that can cause bad water quality.
How long has the tank been set up.
Increase aeration as that help in bad water quality.

tank is 38 litre
got 26 fry (born on wednesday)
tank has been set up 4 1/2 months
have increased the airation of the tank

new stats are

ammonia - 0.25
nitrite - 0
nitrate - 0
ph - 7.5

The tanks overstocked then and not coping, for now I would buy another filter to help with the load, maybe a fluval one
If the fry are healthy I would see if the lfs will take them off your hands,

does the carbon filter affect the ammonia?

I havent long had a case of whitespot in there so havent currently got the carbon filter in there, only the biostars (its a rena tank) carbon filter is just due to go back in there

When you have finished medicating you need to do a water change and add the black carbon to get rid of the med.
Some meds can cause ammonia readings.
All the fry in the tank won't be helping as you have to feed them quite alot of meals aday.

to be honest i didnt want the fry to start with, was sold two 'male' fish but had a female and a male. Someone on here suggested leaving some of the fry out to see if they would get eaten by the others, some have disappeared (eaten or hiding) with one or two floating about, ive just let another few out as hopefully that should solve some of the problem. Im now going to bed as I will be up for work in 5-6 hours and i will get the medications you suggested. Are there any others you suggest keeping on hand for emergencies?

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it
love
nicola
