I have been in the fish hobby for 2 months now almost three. ok I got this 10 gallon tank I got for 5 bucks used. I first tryed to put some rummynose tetras in there and it worked out for 2 weeks then I put more in there they started dieing then waited two weeks then none died so I bought some more.they died now I am down to one and I put it into my community tank that i have. I am done with Rummynose tetras after I found out they are moderate to take care of. though the two tetras I have in my 26 are doing very well.

Anyway I just took the Rummynose tetra out of the 10 gallon tank and put it into the 26 gallon tank. The filter pad is good and everything seems fine. through I did find alot of stuff under the gravel.

MY QUESTION IS.....

I just started breeding and I just had two weeks ago had 9 swordtails and one died last night :( but anyway would like 5 swordtails be able to live in a 10 gallon tank? And should I take the water out and clean the tank and try to start over with the 10 gallon tank before I put the swordtails in there?

Thanks!

Taylor

Im not to sure about sword tails as i am new to this fish hobby also, though i do beleive they will be okay. Just be careful of how many babies they start producing, you will find yourself quickly overstocked.

Also I suggest you read up on the fishless cycling in the new to hobby section of the forum, it will save you alot of sadness from dead fish and it will leave you with healthier and happier fish my friend :)

5 swordtails in a 10 gal is tight, but if it's all you've got it could be worse. You'll need to monitor them for aggression issues and really keep up on large weekly water changes.

I have 6 wild type swordtails in a 20 gallon and it is full. There is no room for more. In a 10 gallon, the swords will not grow properly because they need to get their exercise and a 10 gallon is too small for them to really get up to swimming speed. The bioload would be a bit heavy but could probably be dealt with but the swimming room issue for swords is very real.

I suggest you upgrade your tank, because thats a lot in a 10g.
They're very active. :)
Is your tank cycled? Truthfully, is it?
You'd also need room for them to swim, and I'm wondering if we could get a picture of the dimensions?

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing three swordtails? Maybe, not even, due to swimming issues?

Males grow up to 3", from head to tail. *IME
Females grow around 2",*IME
