ok I have a 5 1/2 gallon tank that is home to guppy fry, and I am having trouble with the Nitrites and Nitrates...They are both WAY up  I have been doing water changes everyday for the past 4 days!! and they wont come down!!! I am afraid I will start losing babies :-(

Heres my water conditions
ph 7.5-7.8 (hard to tell)
Nitrates 160-200
Nitrites 5.0-10.0
Hardness soft
Amonia(sp) 0

Another question is I heard that when nitrites are up the amonia is present? Also I heard that Nitrites are worst on fish than Nitrates?

If someone can tell me what else I can do before I lose my babies :-( please help me!!

U'll need more time for the nitrite to spike before coming down PJ, prob in a week or two. AND I don't think the nitrate will b THAT high... r u sure it's a nitrate kit u hav? or u following the instructions right?

The bacteria will turn ammonia into nitrite so there shouldn't b any ammonia present.

Not sure which of the three (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) is the worst but it wont be good if u have a reading that high...

Do u hav another cycled tank that u can put ur babies into?

Edit: try to get some Nitra-zorb to absorb those nitrate, might help!

I am using a quick dip test stripes by Jungle.. I dont have another tank to put them in

I am following the insrtuctions right, and reading the results on the bottle like it said

In this case I'm afraid u'll hav to continue changing water everyday, or may b twice a day to lower the nitrates level. And as said, nitra-zorb will help, worth investing into it. Good luck!! :)

Or r u feeding too much food to them? coz rotten food n decaying things will raise up the nitrate level.

I am also going to get a different test just to see

I may be feeding too much so I going to cut down and continue with my wcs thanks for your help

Have you tested your tap water for Nitrates?

Yes I have tested my tap water, and it has no sign of Nitrites or Nitrates...Matter of fact its better than my tank water
