I seem to have acquired a rather aggresive growth of Algae. Yesterday I purchased eSHa Protalon-707. I added treatment yesterday and today. I have just had a look at my tank and I notice that 2 of my plants have a white substance on them. One of the plants is a leaf and the white stuff is vainy and on the other plant it looks like little cotton wool buds. Also a log in the tank has started to get a covering on it. No bobbly but smooth. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Bill

How many gallons or litres is the tank.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
How long has the tank been set up?

Many thanks for your reply. The tank is 96 litres and has been set up for over a year. I have 7 Tetras and 4 guppies (3 female and 1 Male). I have about 10 baby guppies that were born a few weeks ago. I normally change water every 3-4 weeks but have missed this cycle as I did not want to do anything that would cause a problem for the babies. Ammonia is .5, PH is 6.6, Nitrite 0 and Nitrate 40. Ammonia has been .5 for a long time (after a disaster with my tank) but cannot seem to get it to 0 but it does not seem to be affecting the fish. I had 2 largish peices of wood that were covered in algae and i have now removed them and also a plant covered in it. The white vainy substance on one of the leaves of the plant has now gone. The algae on one the plants looked like the plant was wearing a wig. Do you think it could have been the algae dying as I had applied the treatment a couple of days earlier? The piece of wood that had white stuff on it I have removed.

ps your are star. I was hoping you would be around.

Rotting plants, and over feeding can cause ammonia spike.
Also with feeding the fry alot, that could also be causing an ammonia spike.

You still need to be doing a water change, and gravel vac once a week.
The ammonia is more harmful to the fry.

To be honest I think I was overfeeding. I have removed the plants that had serious coatings of algae on it. The algae treatment resumes tomorrow after a 2 day break. Water change yesterday (10%). I do not have a gravel base, I use sand. I gave the sand a good clean over the weekend. To be honest I am not sure what constitutes overfeeding. What is your wisdome on this matter?

If all the food hasn't gone in a few minutes you are over feeding.
