Well, this fish is one of 2 that we placed into our tank on Sunday. Seemed ok at the time, noticed today a torn fin and a white dusty effect on his side with maybe some white stringy ?fungus? on that fin.

Water params check out ok - s.g. is stable 1.025 - temp was a bit wobby 26 - 27.5 over the last few days.

Any idea on cause / effect and cure for this? As this is one of our 2 first ever marine fish and only inhabitants of the tank as well as being our daughters fav's we dont wanna lose them !

:/

after spending ages reading more than i care to know about clown fish diseases it sounds like Brooklynella

can anyone confirm this at all before its all too late? i dont have anything to hand to treat it with and both fish are fading fast

update:

not 100% sure if this was a good idea but one site recommended a 15min freshwater dip 'shock therapy' to blast the parasites off - well didnt like the idea but balanced the temp/ph and tried it - seems all the white fungus has cleared from the fins and the fish are now back in the tank and far more active......

dont know if this is a quick fix or a cure / or if the parasite is still there in the tank....

any help from here on in would be very much appreciated :good:

i would quarintine it in another tank. with melafix and primafix. they're good on riding fish from most fungus and bacteria, even some parasites. just go by the directions on the bottle.

i do this every time i buy a fish to help rid fungus and parasites from entering the main tank.
i try not to use copper as a med because iv'e read it could make them stop spawning, or never start for that matter.

it looks like it might be Brooklynella wich is a parasite. and from joyce d. wilkersons book "clownfishes " a must have for clownfish owners ,says to give a fresh water dip for 15 minutes. looks like you on the right track. but unfortunatly even the most experianced aquarists will lose fish from time to time.

Has it become irritated and is it breathing heavily? Your other inhabitants could be at risk if he remains in that tank. If it isnt Brooklynella, it could be a wound from a species of mantis.

Thanks for the replys - dont think its a mantis problem - theres no mysterious clicking from the rocks or any other problems in the tank for 4 weeks its been up. Plus all the symptoms matched the brooklynella - from the stringy fungyus to the flakey looking skin - even the FW dip clearing it off :X

Well both made it overnight and look active and are swimming around - atm though dont have a quarrantine tank - which is going to cause a problem - unless i can make a QT from a 12l bucket and use the spare powerhead and heater i use for salt mixing!

:/

edit for update

Have got the pimafix and melafix and are using the bucket/powerhead/heater to hold the fish while treating them - seems like this could take 7 days to run a course of meds :X What are the chances of surviving that?

1 in the photo died.... other is now back in the display tank as now hes the only inhabitant and not a risk to anything else

:-(

I have had a similar problem happen with my clowns. 1 by 1 they contract the same symmptoms and perish :( I have no idea what the cause is, by the time i see the symptoms on each fish its usually too late.

Sorry for your loss and sorry i cannot be of any more help. :/

The smaller clown we had in a quarrantine tank for now 6 days and been giving some prima/mela fix as was showing signs of some fungus like on the tail fin. Seems to be clearing up ok now and he's made it this far - so maybe this weekend he will go back in the 40gal tank for observation for a week or 2.

No idea if this is a cure or a delay to the inevitable :/

Is this a clown specific problem/disease Navarre? Or something other fish can catch? Just wondering for the future and additional stock!

To be honest i really dont know, if its any consolation however my tank was highly stocked with other fish and the only fish ihave lost are my clowns. 1 pair of skunks and 1 pair of percs :(
I do intend keeping more clowns but for now im going to leave the tank clownless just in case this is a clown only related disease.

seems clowns are one of those potential problems then - which is a bugger because the daughter must have her Nemo :p I'm keeping the 1 survivor in the quarrantine tank still just to make sure - our 3 year old daugher is even able to hand feed him now (under parental control :look: )

The one fin is still a little torn - but its not causing any problems for the fish anyway.... hope for the best I suppose!

:good:
