Please can I apologise that this is not in the livebearer section but for some reason my profile is very restriced and I can start new posts here.

I have been looking all over to try and see when I think my swordtail may have her fry. I think she may be very close, or am I way off. To me she looks pretty square and big! I put her in the trap to take some pics, how long do you think until I should keep her in it and when will she have her fry?

I just dont want to trap her too early, thanks.

Sorry I had problems posting the pics, I hope you can see the album now. x

She looks very pregant I must say, I would bet money that she is within days of a drop, possibly hours, I do not put my fish in traps so I can't really give you advise on when to do it, all I know is the dangers if you do it to fast then you risk the mom aborting/ dieing of stress, I do know that if you are cover the tank and make the room and tank as dark as you can because this reduces stress bigtime, I am sure others with give you advice on when to.

Thanks, sometimes I wonder if I am seeing things, she has been pretty big for a week now. I have just had a quick look at some vids of swordtails having babies on youtube and my swordtail is huge in comparison to some of them. Over the last week her gravid spot had got darker though.

I would love to let her have her fry in the tank but I have an aggressive guppy and I know he will eat the fry (and I really want some to survive). He is already picking on my pregnant female guppy who looks like she will drop anytime now too. My male swordtail seems quite chilled really.lol! x

Now I have sorted out my restrication problems I can finally post here.

I have looked all over to try and find info on how to tell when a swordtail will drop her fry. I have used all of the advice, which tbh I couldnt find much which made it a lot clearer. I think it is just because in a newbie as there is some good pic of a pregnand swordy on here but my female was that big a week ago!lol! But combining info from guppies, mollys etc I think my swordtail is very close. What do you think?

I put her in here to take a pic, I let her out again, but today have put her back in it. The male swordtail is starting to shove her now. The pics were last night. x

She looks pretty close judging by the size of her :good:

Just a word of caution though, moving her around too much could cause her to abort the pregnancy and as she`s clearly close to dropping fry I really would leave her in one place where she can stay quiet and calm :)

Thankyou very much, I have put her in the trap with the lights off and fed her. That pic was taken last night. How long do you think it will be?x

Hmm, bit like asking 'how long is a piece of string' to be honest, I can`t guarantee it obviously but I reckon posibly within the next 2 or 3 days judging by the size my swordtail was every time she dropped her fry

Yep As I said yesterday she is very close I would say one or two days, good luck bud with the next drop from your platty & guppy :good:

Thanks for the advice, I will let you know how we get on ;) x

No baby fishies yet! She jumped out of the trap last night so I am just letting her swim around the tank as normal. Will keep you posted. :) x

This is your picture Bexx. I just copied the img link and pasted it in this topic as so much text.

If you have adequate cover in the main tank, you will get enough fry to cause you problems in a typical tank.
