i have 3 neon tetras, 2 swordtails and an ancistrus catfish in my 28l tank. my female swordtail is pregnant, and i have heard that tetras are notorious for eating young fry. i have a breeding trap, but i have also heard negative reviews about these traps, as they apparantely stress out the pregnant fish. should i put my swordtail in the breeding trap, let the fry stay in there until they are a bit bigger. or shall i just let the fry roam free around my tank?

don't want to lose any young babies. :(

I like to let the mom "drop" in the tank, Putting her in a breeding net will stress her out and could cause her to abort the fry. Once she drops in the main tank, I like to net up the fry and put them in the breeding cage. This allows me to control their Feeding since the fry will need to be fed 6-8 times a day. That way i dont have to put crushed flake food in the main tank 8 times a day, it makes quite the mess. Ill take my fry out of the breeding net in about 4-6 weeks. But everybody has different methodes. Hope mine has helped! :good:

thanks for the reply. :good:

i do agree the breeding trap will probably stress the mother out, but i think it might be hard to scoop the fry up, they are very small and the ornaments and plants might get in the way. i am considering buying some small plants to cover the bottom of the tank as a hiding place for the fry.
