Well today, my sister finally was abvle to add some fish to her tank in her room which has taken its time to cycle.. so she started of with 4 platy. When she got them home i noticed 2 of the 4 platy have a black spot near the bottom, does this mean they are pregnant. Also they are qutie fat, not as fat as some pictures that i have seen on here but fatter than the other 2

thankyou for your time

imogen.

oh another thing, would the fry be able to be left to the own devices or would they get eaten? Just wondering :)

Well, it would be nice to have a picture of the fish in order to judge accurately.
The black dot is called a gravid spot. It's not a good indicator because some fish always have it while it is never visible on others.
Again, a picture would help.

If you leave the fry alone, some will live most likely. You would definitely up their chances of survival if you thickly planted the tank or added a few small ornaments with holes they could hide in. :good:

I do not see any reference to how big the tank is that we are talking about here. If it is a small tank, you cannot afford to have many fry survive and they are less likely to survive on their own. If you have lots of room for the fry, and no other fish in the tank, you could well get good survival rates on the fry as long as there is some decent cover for them to hide from teh adults.
