Hello,

I have three guppies and one xipho with a black spot and a big belly. Can you tell me if they are pregnant or not? Thanks!

1st pic - Pregnant - When the bottom of her stomach goes flat (squares off) expect fry within the next 2 days

2nd pic - Very early in the pregnancy

3rd pic - Again, quite early in the pregnancy

4th pic - Expect fry within the next few days!!! :hyper:

TIP: I know when my livebearers are ready to drop when they square off, and also, watch their anus. A few hours before mine are going to drop fry, their anus opens quite wide, so the fry can get out easily.

Good luck with the fry!! I got 11 fry today  :D

Thanks. No fry yet. I'm watching them so i can move them to the birthing cage when the moment comes.

The stress of being cooped up can often lead to problems with the fish - if you have a spare tank, then you could set this up as a birthing tank. If not, it's better for the mum to stay in the tank, and move the fry to the cage.

+1

+2 means i really agree. leave the mother alone. before i found out you shouldn't move them. i put my pregnant guppy in a breeding tank for rams. quite a big cage that sits on the side of the tank. she died! i've since never done it again (obviously you don't make the same mistake twice!) but your wife moving the next one that was pregnant, while i'm at work, to the breeding tank i used not knowing how stupid i was and not mentioning anything to her. guess what 2nd guppy dead. leaving me with 2 females and 2 males. not a good ratio as i later found out two more dead females. if your thinking of moving the female it clearly means your new to livebearers or been giving the wrong info. as since i stopped being stupid. i've had fry after fry after fry. i set up a fry tank and have around 30-40 fry in their now and i gave away just over 60 a week ago. maybe buying 9 female guppies and 5 female swordtails was a ott lol

All of your livebearers are carrying fry. Only the swordtail looks close to a drop. The guppies are carrying fry by definition, there is a male in the tank. Without the male present, there would be no telling about the guppies because they are that far away from a drop. The dark belly you see on them could have been nothing more than a decent food supply.
