Hi, can anyone help me. I'd really like to know if my dalmation molly is pregnant im not sure but she is about 3-4 inches in length and looks rather fat! She is in a tank with a yellow male and another small white female. Ive looked at her belly and i cant seem to find a gravid spot but with her being dalmation it is very hard to tell. she is getting bigger and bigger and starting to resemble a sort of 'J'shape, with her belly being quite sqaure. The white molly is also female but the male doesnt seem to have bothered her at all. she is only about an inch long though and really very small could it be that she is too young? Please ask If anyone would like to see a picture i can try and post one on for you. Also if she is pregnant when should i put her in a breeding trap i would prefer not to put her in there for too long!
Thankyou =]

If shes with a male then she will be pregnant the other could be to young and thats why he has not bothered her. TBH i wouldn't put her in a trap with her being so big it would stress her out and she could either abort or die. If she is really big in length then i would expect quite alot of babies from her unless it's her first time. Mollies don't have a gravid spot and really you need to watch her shape if she has quite a square-ish belly then she could be close. Can you see a birthing tube? Let her give birth in the main tank and then catch the fry with a net and put them in the trap. Hope this helps.

Not Sure what a birthing tube looks like? Have you got a pic you could post?
thanks again =]

The birthing tube is a tiny white tube that appears around the anal hole,and what looks like a black dot in the centre,when you see this you know she'll be close to dropping...

Welcome to the forum Dannibear.
I find all of the traditional gravid spot type observations are almost useless with a molly. I judge them mostly by the size and shape of the fish's belly. There is a thread with a link in my signature area called My Moll'y progress that walks you through a set of pictures starting with a fry drop and ending with the next fry drop. I made the thread to help people see the subtle changes that happen and get a feel for what to expect at each stage of a pregnancy.
