Hi all,

Apologies for the poor picture quality.

My new female guppy has a dark spot at the back of her belly. Liking online, this tells me she is pregnant. I've only had her for a few days but believe I bought her already pregnant.

From looking at the picture, can anyone confirm this or estimate how far gone she is so I can work out when it is best to move her into her birthing tank?

Thanks in advance

Hi, most of our livebearers arrive pregnant. This is purely down to breeders and sellers not keeping males and females seperate. The general rule of thumb is "if she's been anywhere near a male in the last 6 months she's pregnant".

Looking at your picture she has got a gravid spot - that is the black spot you can see. This black spot is actually the eye's of the fry she's holding showing through her skin.
I can't say how far along she is - that is impossible to know. What I can tell you is that when she's ready to drop the fry she will take on a boxy appearance around her belly. You may be able to see the breeding organs opening up. She will almost definitely isolate herself and go and sit in a quiet corner. If she's young (which she looks young) she will probably only drop a few fry but this will increase as she ages - that's if you have a male in with her. It's worth noting that females can hold the male sperm for up to 6 months so even if you don't have her with a male she could still keep on dropping some fry. Females will eat their own fry too.

Hopefully that's helpful and has answered your query :)
