Ok, so here's the story,

Last week, I bought a female guppy. A few hours later, I noticed that she was squared off, and her gravid spot was red. I thought she gave birth recently, or somehow in my tank. She is still squared off and seems to have gotten bigger, and has a black spot toward the top of her gravid spot. I'm very confused and I'm not sure what the answer to this evidence is. Can someone help me decipher what is going on???

It would help if you posted a picture but chances are she is pregnant. I'm not too experienced with guppies but from personal experience my guppies would get a black gravid spot after they ate. After they expelled the food out, it would be pinkish which can mean that the guppy is pregnant but the eggs aren't developed. I would wait for someone more experienced to answer you but if she has been in any contact with a male it is more than 90% pregnant!

females will hang on to the fry until the conditions are right, a heavily planted tank that is cycled will allow stress to lessen and the right environment will be provided for her to drop them.
