I just got a guppy who is obviously pregnant. She's droppin these mucus lookin balls what is this?

She probably got stressed out and is now miscarrying, or dropping eggs. Watch them carefully, some might uncurl into small little guppy fry.

This may be a dumb question but I'm still pretty new at the fish thing. What do u mean uncurl into small guppy fry?

Guppies are livebearers, which means they deliver their young fully developed. They don't lay eggs. But if you just got her, she's probably all stressed out and is just dropping the egg sacs, with or without the fry (newborn guppies).

There are no dumb questions here!

ok thank u so much. ya i believe all she dropped was empty sacs. is it possible she may get pregnant again ive heard guppies can drop more fry every 28 days with or without male?

It's certainly possible. Be on the lookout! Make sure there are lots of plants for the fry to hide in when they do come.

Please be sure to ask all the questions you like. Lots of folks ready to help you here.

ok thank you i appreciate it. is it a good idea to get a breeder tank? i hear some people say the little box thing you put in the tank is good and some people say the net is better?????/

Neither one of those contraptions is good. It puts much too much stress on the mother. It's really best to set up a separate cycled tank, and when the mother is close, then put her in it and when she's finished having the fry, then net her and put her back in the main tank and then you can take care of the fry.

Otherwise, just leave everybody in the main tank and let the fry fend for themselves. You'll certainly lose some to being snacks for other fish, but there will be plenty of others to come along and take their place!

Ok I have a spare 1.5 gallon tank that's empty sittin in my closet would that be good enough for the fry?

It would be a VERY temporary home for them. How big is your main tank, and how many fish are in it now?

your very helpful thank u. And my main tank is 10 gallons. Right now there's just the 3 female guppies. I plan on gettin 3 platys. And after a week or so I wanna get 2 or 3 otos

How long has it been set up? Did you cycle it first? You might want to invest in some plants for the fry to hide in rather than more fish for a while.

its only been up for about a week now. they have only been in there a couple of days

how possible would it be if i got good plants for the fry to hide in that they would even survive in the 10 gallon with the 3 female guppies

If your tank has only been up a week, you need to concentrate on doing a fish-in cycle. Please click on the link in my sig to find where to go from here. If your tank isn't cycled, it's doubtful any of the fry, and likely the fish you have now will survive long. Please read up now. Right after you do a massive water change.

I went through a terrible cycling problem like you. I bought a few guppies and then was told i did not cycle my tank. I lost ALOT of fish. Do NOT buy any more no matter how tempting it is. Focus on cycling. You can try to save the ones you have now. Good luck. Just so you know it will get better. It only takes about s month to cycle and once that is over with you can buy healthy happy fish!
