Praise For Maidenhead Aquatics

I went there today just to have a look and do some research. I got talking to the bloke that worked there and he was very helpful. Telling what fish went with what and all about doing the fishless cycle and testing it all first. He said fish in cycles were harder. And he wouldn't sell fish to anyone who hadn't done things properly and knew their PH.

He was very clued up. Something he did say but I never asked why. He said when u get the new fish don't feed them for 3 days. Why is this?

As far as the no feeding thing....
When I get new fish, they normally would not eat the first day. Maybe because the stress of being in a new home. If they do not eat the food, the food breaks down and releases ammonia into the water.

Because of that, if you are adding your very first fish, I would not feed them the first day.

yeah he really knew what he was talking about. I like guppies and was thinking of one Fighting fish but he said not together because of the flashing fins.

He really knew what he was on about which was good. I was just looking to get some ideas. A lot of places would try and get you to buy loads at once. He even said when my water is ok only have 3 then if they are ok after a week come back and I can add more then

Which MA was it?

I normally advise people not to feed their fish for 2-3 days because of the epic filtration we have, the fish get huge feeds 2-3 times a day and because of the stress of moving on the fish and the stress of fish waste on the new filter, we tend to advise people not to feed them for a couple of days, generally only on new tanks that you dont want to put lots of pressure on.

Sounds like you got a good member of staff

I have two MAs near me. Both friendly and helpful places but the advice you get really depends on who you talk to, it still surprises me how varied the standard of knowledge is between all the staff. One guy couldn't understand why I was planning on adding ammonia, had never heard of fishless cycling, and tried to sell me danios to 'set the water up'.

I find the new fish the opposite - I usually give them a few hours to settle in then feed - they are usually starving as they dont get much in the fish shop and they usually gulp it down!

Have to say Maidenhead Aquatics are indeed excellent its where i find the rarer or unusual fish, my local branch is Leeds.

we shop at Maidenhead aquatics now every time after visiting the one at Whisby garden centre, Lincs.
Amazing shop, great stock, well kept, with some rare fish.
The guys know what they are on about, and wont just sell you any old crap to make up ther £££!
