hi all,

recently i seam to of heard powerheads mentioned in connection to tropical tanks,i thought powerheads were more used in the salty marine world.

if used in tropical are they worth while or not?

my tank is 200 lt and i have 10x turn over rate using 2 eheim externals.

Generally speaking, powerheads are used in tropical tanks that require extra help with circulation, or creating a current. Particularly useful for high tech planted (pressurised co2 etc) or with fish that prefer it with faster water flow. I can't think of any other reason for them off hand...

They are just used as an aid to water flow in planted tanks to help prevent algae and also for fish species who's natural habitat is more turbulent !

Just an FYI- I use powerheads with large intake sponges as filters. It is the same principle as and air driven sponge but with greater flow. I find these serve double duty in tanks with plecos. I get sponge filters and current from a single setup.

How does that work TTA? Do you wrap the sponge around side of the powerhead?

NO, I use the ATI Filtermax prefilter kit. But then I use one of the Pro line of sponges instead of the pre-filter sponge. The kit has the internal m/fm skeleton pieces and then all the adapters plus the plus to seal of the other end of the sponge since no stand is involved.

but with these sponges (think one of the 3 on the right end)

You can see all the hardware parts here http://www.kensfish.com/parts-fittings/ati-replacement-parts.html

Great idea. Thanks for sharing :)
