Hi there, my power went off for an hour and a half and now a platy is gasping at the top of the tank. Will she recover. Is there anything I can do for her, I've put some food in to see if she will eat but she hasn't x

Is the power back on?

You may need to get some oxygen into the water. Do you have an air pump or anything like that? If not, maybe try a small waterchange (10% or something) to get some oxygenated water back into the aquarium.

The power came on after an hour and a half. We've lost her, she's died sob. We've got an air stone in already but we've done a 25% water change so I hope the other fish don't die x

Two more fish are poorly now, same symptoms as the platy, both guppies. Don't know whether its cos of the lack of oxygen or what, they are both gasping at the top of the tank and their gills are permanently stuck out, don't know what to do x The tank size is 70litre x

What are the water stats etc....could be a build up of toxins in the water. Also what are the tank dimensions/gallons and fish stock in said tank.

We've checked, Ph, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate and all are ok, same as they've been for weeks. We have one plec, 4 guppies, 8 neons, 2 panda coreys, 1 albino corey and two platys x

That doesnt sound rite, the stats should change a little. Are you using test strips or are you using a liquid test. Also what are the exact water stats

Sorry its a 70litre tank. I'm sure it must be something to do with the power shortage as they were all totally fine before. We are using the test tube kits. We've just done another test and everything is slightly up since yesterday, the nitrite is a teeny weeny bit pink hardly anything in it really not even 0.1mg. The nitrate is orange, it was yellow in colour yesterday, the ammonia is yellow/very very light green, it was yellow yesterday and the ph is 8.5 but that's always been that. Has everything gone up to fight whatever had happened to the tank with the power shortage x

Two of the guppies are looking really bad. They now can't swim properly, look in awful pain, gasping, gills permanents wide open so we are euthanising them. We so hope that this isn't going to happen to the rest of the fish as we really love them. The fish must have been really poorly as they both died in 2 seconds with the crushed ice method, I'm so sad now :-(

We only have two guppies left and another seems to be affected. Its not gasping yet but its gills are starting to permanently flare open and the other guppy is pecking at its gills. We are going to do another water change and test the water again, don't know what else to do

Sounds like water to me. Guppies are often sensitive to nitrate. the pH is also a littel high for them. I would recomend a pritty large water cahnge (say 50%) every other day, untill you nitrates are below 12.5ppm, and the pH is 7.5 or below.

hope this helps

Thanks. We are doing a 25% water change and gravel vac at the moment and then testing the water again. We've only just finished cycling the tank so we don't want to do a really big change. Our PH has always been 8.5 even when everything else has been brill. How do we reduce the PH. We've bought a PH adjuster but it doesn't seem to have done anything x

Actually, once the cycle has finished, you do need to do a large water change before you add the fish (to get the nitrates down). I'm sure this doesn't have anything to do with the power cut; we had the power off for nearly three hours a few weeks ago and everything was fine. Water takes a surprisingly long time to lose heat. I can't help thinking this is a nitrate problem.
