If anyone has any advice they can give about this please could you advise. I'm very worried about my fish.

I have a 96 litre tanks that me and my lovely mum managed to keep to a temp of 24 degrees c and we pumped in oxygen every now and then as often as poss.

I am aware after reading posts on here that my bacteria could well have been killed during this crappy power cut that has taken forever to fix and feel i may be up poo creek without a paddle. Just as i had all my fish happy and healthy! Grrr!! I have another tank at my bfs which was lucky enough to not be affected by any power cuts so i could bring the mature flter from that over to here in order to establish new colonies.

I've put some meth blue in the tank as a precautionary measure.

Any questions please ask and any advise anyone could give would be gratefully received. Has anyone else had such a power cut for so long asnd if so how did you deal with it and what were the outcomes?

can you get the fish to the other tank - even only as a temp measure ?

If the temp is still ok, make sure you try to keep the water moving some how.
If you can do that you should be fine.

Is it just your house that is without power?

If so - I'd ask my neighbours nicely if you can run an extension lead to the tank - OK it might cost a few quid for a log lead but it would save the fish (and you could make a coffee ;)

hi, you could try wrapping blankets around your tank or if you cook with gas fill pop bottles with hot water and float these in your tank. when your power comes on you could buy some filter start. i have had some great results with this. its by interpet and its really good stuff. give my love to your lovely mum, i haven't got mine anymore and i miss her so much

Take a clean cheap plastic cup and poke a couple dozen 1/8" holes in the bottom. Put your filter media in the cup, clip it to the inside rim of the tank, and pour water through it a few times hourly. This will keep your filter media wet & fed, as well as taking out some of the ammo & nitrites the fish produce. Withhold food while the power is out, and for a couple of days afterwards, less food means less waste produced.

I would use only the filter media from the other aquarium, because when it starts up again it could
pollute your water with all the dead bacteria.Remove all the filter media before starting the power up,get some new
sponges and use as much media and water from the other aquarium as possible. :hey:

Hmmn... i'm no expert, but a way around fixing circulation may be to produce CO2 using water, sugar, yeast and bi-carbonate of soda. It takes 7 seconds for it to diffuse into the water. Therefore, if you put an air-stone, or keep just a tube in there attatched to an air-tight seal, making CO2, there may be a tiny bit more circulation, and you wont get increased CO2 levels either as it will have gone to the top by then. :D that will bubble nicely for a good few days :D

Can someone verify whether that is a good idea or not plz :D

for heat, and i know this sounds pretty simple and stupid, find a way to get an open flame from a candle or something and find a way to get something metal (i used a spoon) touching the flame at one end and the surface of the water at the other end. The metal will heat up and get to the whole spoon or what ever you use and heat the water. When my power went out it worked great, just keep an eye on ur thermometer and turn the candle on and off as needed. Depending on what fish you have, most fish can handle a one to two degree fluctuation in temperature.

For the filter media, i know this sounds kinda dumb too, but if you can remove it and put it in something with some tank water then if you can get your hands on some ammonia add some to the water the filter media is in, that way you will have a mini cycle going on. I have been doing that because im using meds on my tank right now, but my main filter media has carbon in it which i had to take out leaving only the sponge.

That sounds like a great idea I must remember that one in the event of a power cut.

OK people, power is back on. Came on last night, i immediately did a fifty per cent water change as the nitrite levels and ammonia levels were rather crappy. I've done another fifty per cent water change just now which should make them feel better. I did another test just before i did it and the levels have dropped so something is working.

Thank you for all your help. Any further advice you could give for the aftermath of such a crappy situation would also be greatly appreciated.

Before the power cut, Al my Albino cory was looking a bit ill but now he seems to have perked up. I'm pretty sure it must be something to do with the Meth. Blue i added. I have noticed he looks a little bloated though, not majorly but a bit. But on the other hand i've never seen him look so perky for a long while. Could it be the Meth. Blue and if so should i continue treating the tank with this?

Thanks Guys, you're all stars xx

Ps - Purchased a generator online as soon as power came back on!! I never want to put my mum or me through anything like this again! (oh..or my fish...)

If anyone can advise on what to do now i'd love you forever (in pretend land)
I was thinking of doing a gravel vacuuming tonight along with another water change.
Also has anyone got any suggestions about Al? x
