I was wondering if anybody could give me a little info on the powder blue gouramis. My girlfriend has been drooling  on them in the store, and I would to know if:
  • How big they get?
  • Will a 10 Gallon be sufficient for there needs?
  • will they usually get along with other fish, namely fancy guppies?
Also if there is anything else I should know ???? . The proposed setup is a ten gallon tank sand substrate HOB filter turned all the way down and a few tank decorations. One that includes an airstone. Thanks for any input you may have.

An excellent choice of gourami for the smaller tank as they only reach 2 inches but rather fragile due to mass-production and in-breeding, dwarf gourami males are territorial towards one another but very peaceful towards other species. They should be fine in a 10 gallon and fine with guppies. You will want to try to not add too many top-dwelling fish so they don't get crowded and feel less inclined to fight for limmited territory. Most probably your lfs only stocks males. If this is the case don't get more than 2 and make sure you add them at the same time and that they have plenty of hiding places. Floating plants, real or fake, are much appreciated. If you are lucky enough to have females at your lfs, a male and 2 females would work great. The females are not territorial to the same extent as the males and, IMO, just as beautiful in their own way. I say to get 2 as the male will chase a single female constantly. With 2 the attention will be devided and mean less stress for the females.
Having said all that, I would actualy have to suggest honey gouramies instead of dwarfs. You can get more if you go with honeys and, being slightly smaller, they will be happier in the small tank than the dwarfs would. The males develop beautiful coloring though probably not quite as stunning as the powder blue dwarfs and the females are an attractive silver-brown to pale orange color. A couple of males and three or so females would be very happy in a 10 gallon. Most importantly, the honeys are not as likely to carry disease as the dwarfs so would likely last longer.
In the end it's up to you. Just keep in mind your stocking levels and make sure your tank can take whatever you add. Also remember that guppies breed like rabbits so can easily over-stock a 10 gallon alone.
