After much research, I've come up with this potential stock list.

29 Gallon Aquarium, sandy bottom, lots of river rock, lots of plants.
Pair of Blue rams
Pair of Bolivian Rams
4 Cories
5 small shoaling fish
5 another small shoaling fish

How does that sound?

I don't think there's enough space in a 29g for 2 different pairs of rams to get along. They might, but a 29g is the same as a 20g long as far as the rams are concerned and I wouldn't put two ram pairs in a 20g long either. Consider just getting a single pair of your perferred species.

The only other thing I would personally do is go with a much larger single shoal of fish instead of 2 minimal shoals. A 10-12 fish school of a single species is much more visually interesting than 2 5 fish schools. Most people want lots of species though, so... :dunno:

Sounds like a potentially great planted tank. Please show us some pics when it's ready!

Thanks for your help! I've been thinking about getting another 55 gallon tank...and you're tempting me to do it (even though I really shouldn't!) :D I may have some extra money coming in, and if that goes through...I just might..

If I can't get the larger tank, I suppose I'll just pick one species of rams and go with a pair of those, like you suggested (though it's going to be really hard to pick one!) And if I only get one pair, that opens up some space for more fish, so I could go with 2 different groups of 10 shoaling fish, eh? That sounds like it would be a very fun and active tank. :S

I'll get pictures when it's set up in a couple of weeks!

i've tried keeping two bolivian rams and two blue rams in a 20 gallon and after a week, one male had taken over 75% of the tank, leaving little space for the other 3 fish.

Stick with 2 rams or get a bigger tank. Of course, a bigger tank is much mroe fun!
