Hi everyone, i would like to know how to post bettas to people in the UK, i need to know everything i need to do and which courier, im in northampton,

Kevin

I use the Royal Mail to distribute Killifish throughout the Uk. (but they don't know). It's not the fish that concerns them it's the water leaking into their machinery.
Obtain a small Polystyrene box from your local aquarist establishment. Dont feed you fish for 24 hours before sending. Place one fish in each bag (1/3 water : 2/3 air) and tie a tight double knot at the top now insert the bag with the fish into another fish bag and do the same. (double bagging)
Line you box with newspaper and bubblewrap for added insulation. Insert any instructions, Seal around the lid with packaging tape. Then wrap the box in strong brown paper and address. It is still too cold to distribute fish through the postal system so a heat pack will have to be included in your box. (but I strongly advise you to wait until the Spring)
Thats all there is to it really sept to mention that it's best to post at the beginning of the week so as the fish don't get held up in the postal system over weekends. If you send it 1st class in the morning, then normally the recipient will recieve their parcel the next day.
Regards
BigC

Safe BigC! do you know where i can get heat packs? and i agree that i should post in spring to....

BigC, how often do the fish arrive dead? Often? Hardly ever?

It is just that sending by royal mail, I would imagine the fish get banged around an awful lot. Much more so than it might with a courier I am sure.

Also, if you are going to post by royal mail, would it not be better to use special delivery? It may be more expensive, but at least the service should be faster, just in case things do get held up with regular mail (which I know is normally pretty good)

Lastly, do you mark the package with a "this way up" sign? Do you wrap place "fragile" stickers on it?

Not that I am considering posting fish, but I am hoping others who may consider it may think further about posting fish from my questions.

I'ved recently sent out a few fish through APC which will accept live fish, so it's not some sneeky move!

First delivery was a bit of a failure with 1 out of 3 dead, they were all bags separately. They died because the courier collected the parcel unexpectedly early at 9am they got delivered at 10am the next day, the heat packs only last for 20hours so were stone cold. This 1 of them not reviving.

The next consignment was for 6 fish, I packed these 3 each in 2 big bags, taped a heat pack to the bottom of each bag then placed it in the box with extra wadding, this time I dropped the parcel off to the couriers depot at 6pm and was delivered at 8am so the fish weren't phased by the journey at all, bags were nice and warm and started feeding right away.

When using heatpacks I always wrap them in newspaper.

I get my heat packs from here... http://www.livefoods.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=213

although do a search on ebay, sometimes there's lots of 10 which go cheap.

do you order from their site? because i cant see a link to buy body warmers

and how do you use heat packs? i mean like how do you position them? 1 in a box? or 1 on each corner of the box? around the bag? what do they come like?

The body warmers you take out the packet and just move it about ijn your hand until the chemicals mix and start giving off heat.

Like said above I wraped the heat packs in newspaper and taped them dirrectly to 1 end of the bag, where the water will sit.

If your sending 1 fish then 1 heatpack taped to 1 bag. But you wouldn't need any more than 2 heat packs in a box.
