I am torn between going with a brown gravel for my planted tank, or going with a white sand, so I wana see what some of your sand tanks look like, especially with plants.

Thanks if you post! :)

just set up two nights ago...Cleared up quick i was suprised...

Nobody looked at the post of my new tank set-up so maybe ya'll will see it here,

I used to have a sand tank with loaches, angels and catfish, looking back on it I kinda regret having white sand as a base as all the droppings tend to show up quite easily, especially with a bright fluorescent light brightening it all up. :/ However as tnhowery's photo shows - I guess it can look nice in some ways.

I noticed that problem to..After some brainstorming i thought that a powerhead would either kick up the junk so the filter could pick it up or atleast get into the planted area so that it wasnt as visible.

So i took off to wally world (Wal-Mart) and picked one up for twenty bucks, 170 GPH and it works great, did exactly what i wanted it to.

My sand looks exactly like snow. I wish it was a little more yellowish. Its pure white. Here are a few pics as of right now. Easy to set up; cleared instantly (actually it never got cloudy and was clear from the start). I set it up like 2 hours ago from having gravel. I like the look. I think its way better than gravel.

this was taken a while back, but this is just regular argos play sand, works an absolute treat, takes little time to wash, and looks great.

A nano: 2.5g (this is an older tank, Googie has gone away this past spring). The tank is different now with 4 small Java Fern and Red Cherry shrimp tending to the mess of 3 small guppy fry.

My tank with brown silica sand. I really like the colour as I'm not too keen on white sand.

Wow these are some great looking tanks

Lyn781-where did you get the brown silica sand at i was having a hard time around here trying to find any.

I got mine from a fish shop in Cupar, Scotland. Bit far from you. Got a bucket of spare stuff in the garage too. :D

Neither of my two lfs carry sand, i had to use play sand from home depot, it worked just as good tho alothough i like the darker color it still is a huge improvement over gravel.

one of the reasons I used gravel over sand was i wanted to grow ground cover and i heard it is quite hard to do that with sand.

Someone with more experence might tell you different but I would take that into account when thinking of doing "heavily planted tank" unless you arn't planning on using any ground cover..........

I found that my internal power head filter works a treat in keeping water clean in sand tanks as my eheim 2213 and hang on filter ( 300 L per hour) haven't done alot for my 75 gallon...every one of my tanks has sand and I use it for safety reasons above all as Im a fan of bottom feeding fish...I cannot take pics of my tanks as one is being treated for velvet ( see OOOooohhhh Craaappp thread :p ) and the other is merely sand shells kribensis fry cories and kuhlii's not alot happening and isn't very interesting :)
