I've got a sick guppy with fin rot (also has some other strange symptoms but that's beside the point). Anyway, The package says to take out your charcoal filter before treating. When do you put the filter back in? After 15 minutes? After the whole recommended 7 days treatment? Seems like a bad idea to go without a filter for a week. Just confused. Thanks in advance for your help :)

Continue running the filter with no charcoal. Charcoal removes medications.

ideally you have a filter that you can remove the carbon from, but maybe yours is set up like mine where the carbon is attached the filter pad thing. in which case you do have to take it out...what i did recently was took it out, cut off the pad and put that back in, threw away the carbon

Carbon, Charcoal ha! I totally don't know what i'm talking about. Shoot, I don't want to cut my filter apart though, the ones for my tank are expensive, maybe I could find a blank pad in instead. Do you think it would be ok if I just left the filter out at night, and put it back in during the day?

do u mean carbon lol?

The OP is calling it charcoal, it may well be. I'm not there, can't see it.

Slit one side of the pad & remove it. You don't need to shred the pad to get it out, it's small granules. Most aquarists don't run it anyway, it has absorbed most chemicals or other matter in the water in a few days. I only run it to remove meds, none of my tanks have carbon/charcoal.

No, running it only during the day would not be good, perhaps even be the worst possible choice, as then you will lose your 'friendly bacteria' by not running the filter at night, and then the charcoal / carbon would remove all the meds during the day.

You NEED to remove the carbon, and KEEP the filter and pads.
