I have an empty 10gallon tank and i am in need of something new. there are thrre species of puffer that i am interested in the dwarf puffer(carinotetraodon travacoricus), the red-tailed red-eyed puffer(carinotetraodon irrubesco), and fang's puffer(tetraodon cochinchinensis).
I am primarily interested in irrubesco and travacoricus. i hoped to have either a pair of irrubesco or a trio of dwarfs in the ten gallon. does that sound like a good idea?
if not a pair of irrubesco thne one solitary male or female. i think the irrubesco are my favorites so far.
does anyone have any tips for a beginner besides what i have already read about freshwater puffers and the three above species? im very open to any advice or species info. i plan on hopefully having my boss(taking advantage of a discount and special ordering at the lps where i work) order one of the above species for me sometime next week. i have a tank setup with 3 betta unimaculata in it that i think im going to put the puffers in. the unimaculatas will be going into my spare 10gallon.

oh and how much sohuld i expect to pay for the 3 above species?

Thnaks for the info!

Ok, I've got a dwarf puffer in a 10gallon, I paid about 2.49 for mine, (USD). Be sure you've got plenty of little snails laying around in other tanks, or other sources of live food, because I'm still having a hard time getting mine to take dead food. Hope that helps a little.

awesome, i got 3 dwarf puffers at petsmart today for 2.49 because they were there and i had a 5$ coupon. im going to get some baby snails when i work and im going to try them on frozen blodworms tonight. they looked very healthy in the store.

im still going to look into getting a red eyed or red tailed red eyed puffer for the 10g.

3 should be okay as long as you have great filteration and lots of places to hide. Plants are ideal, but you also need caves and bogwood and stuff - it depends on your preferred style of tank. But you DO need to have plenty of hiding spaces and such like. That and the food are probabvly going to cost the most when it comes to the puffers, but they're woth it.

ok, at the moment the three are in a 5g temporarily until i can find a small bag of sand. freakin petsmart only had this gigantic bag of black sand and reptie calcium sand and i didnt know how safe that would be so they are in a 5g temporarily, but would they be able to live in that permanently?
i just fed them bloodworms and one has gone and made itself very fat the other two havent eaten anything. i should stop feeding and wait to try and feed the others right?

alsooooooooo what about the red tailed red eye puffers. anyone know anything about them aside from what ive read on the list of puffers?

No, they wouldn't be able to stay in the 5g permanantly, most would say you shouldn't try in the 10g, but I think it's worth a try as long as it's heavily planted.

Yeah, stop feeding for now, and try to make sure the others get some too, perhaps try taking the food to them as well? It's probably just a settling issue.
