So........... am I just dim or is a gourami a cichlid?

No, gouramies are - well their gouramies - they belong mostly to the family 'belontidae'. However, they are quite closely related to cichlids and do share some similar characteristics such as their territorial behaviour and the way they become aggressive when breeding.
