looked at my goldfish today and my male is showing signs of septicemia. Just set up the hospital tank and I am about to go out looking for meds. Unfortunately the only place that will be open at this time of day will be walmart.

Any suggestions on overnight if they do not have the meds I need? It wasn't visible yesterday so I'm hoping to have caught it early enough for it to be treatable. Will heat be an issue? The tank shouldn't go below 72 because that is the temperature of my room. too high, not high enough? Can't find anything on treating it, really. A few sites saying the same meds, and then the apparently obligatory YOUR FISH WILL DIE, but nothing about dealing with it really.

recommended meds:
EM Tablets
Triple Sulfa Capsules
Maracyn-Two

thanks :)

just wanted to add that the tank he is in is going through a mini-cycle due to a recent switch of my community and the goldfish so the stats are jumpy. ammonia was present (forget the exact number right now), nitrates were high, but still safe, no noticeable nitrites. Did a big water change after the test, though.

Tetracycline but it will wipe the bacteria colony out in the filter.

That em tablet is fine if its this antibiotic, but tetracycline is better antibiotic.

Erythromycin
Bacterial medication that treats gram positive & some gram negative bacteria, including those that cause fin and tail rot, Gill Disease and Molly Disease.

tetracycline, huh? i'll add that one on. Since he's going in a QT tank I'm not too worried about the bacteria colony in the filter being destroyed as I keep it cycled for this very purpose :)

Good, bless him hope he pulls through, good luck.

Tetracycline
Manufacturer: Aquatronics
A broad-spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment of gram-positive and some gram-negative bacterial infections. For infections of fin and tail rot, frayed fins, popeye, inflamed gills, mouth and body open sores/ulcers, livebearer disease, dropsy, Columnaris, and secondary infections such as fungal. Specific for livebearers and goldfish. Aerate the aquarium well when using. Useful for the control of some common bacterial diseases, including Aeromonias and Pseudomonas Genera and the Mysobacterial group.

i'm thinking he'll be alright as he has absolutely no symptoms of being ill except for the red in the fins, and he didn't have that until today. but time to quit gabbing, gotta go get the meds.

i saw something that said that somewhere. guess we'll see as walmart is useless and not only sells meds, but is now selling betta vases and little TV-shaped tanks. ugh!

Perhaps it was that then. I'll hold out hope that that's all it was and that it will clear up. That would be best as i intended to leave them at my apartment over break and if i have to treat him, i'd have to take him home for christmas
