Hello all, I have posted this here as I wish for the best advice from the mbuna keepers. I am contenplating selling my mbuna tank which is 42x26x26, over £120 worth of volcanic rock, 2 x new light units, 2 x 300w heaters and a wide variety of fish, some wild caught and f1s. I dont wish to sell the fluval fX5 but could add an EHEIM PRO 2. what do you think would be a good asking price??? there is a home made stand but no lid. cheers guys.

Oh that's a hard one. IMO it's really hard to sell complete setups unless you happen to be very lucky and have someone practically living on your doorstep. I watched loads on ebay and they either didn't sell or went for ridiculously low prices. A good rule of thumb is second hand stuff isn't worth more than half of what you paid for, Good luck!!

One of the cats is going at the weekend, 1 down, 2 to go. I'm trying to make room for US and the choice is to transfer my mbuna into another 6x2x2 and have that and my happs tank over one another, 2 6ft tanks on a racking system, dont know?????? concrete floors, but not sure to what kind of wooden frame would take the weight. I live in southport nelly (merseyside). the tanks have got me a bit down lately as theres no organisation in where i have put them.

Sounds like you could do with building an outdoor structure specifically for your fish, maybe something along the lines of a fish shed!! Now there's an idea and it would keep your fish in a very organised regimented fashion, I read a DIY fish shed post somewhere, looks like quite the project, you have my full support if you decide to go at it.

As regards the sale of the fish and equipment, I wouldn't have a notion as to what you should charge for that lot, sorry I couldn't be of any help!

Woooo FISH SHED!!!!

If only i had the room , As for the racking i think you may be past wood frames best bet would be steel H beam frame and wood slats.

Breywn,

since you are always so fond of using old furniture as stands, why not buy an old bunk bed and reinforce it!!!
Would you need to do a lot of reinforcing!!! Cheap solution but I don't know how effective it would be! You would have to cut the bunk in half to reduce the width and then reinforce reinforce reinforce, but at least you would have a good frame to work around and most bunks are six feet in length.

WEY HEY Tanks, it would be easier for me to move into the shed. I do like the idea of getting another 6ft tank and stacking.

adambrum, are you speaking from experience? are you saying timber wont do, or, are you like me and assuming timber may not do. :good:

I think wood will take the weight with enough braces but a 6" tank is very heavy , if you go to an engineering firm tell them the weight they should be able to make a much more suitable stand which will not warp shrink or expande. also you wont know if a wood stand will take the weight until its full of water.

This problem has only developed because I bought a new settee and I underestimated the size of it!!!! and because of the vast variations of size in my tanks, they wont look nice bunched up together in one room.

scaffolding maybe???? Its to take the weight of 300gallons + glass

take the setee back problem solved ha ha

300 gallon , I thinks thats about 1200 kg of water plus glass plus rocks plus substrate ,Mmm i really think its a job for proffesionals.

just admit it you have a bad case of mts

( my maths is probably out a bit im sure someone will correct me but its about right )

300g=1300L, 1L=1kg. So you looking at around 1500kg i think or 1.5 tonnes id make the stand out metal if i were you but even then it would have to be a decent thickness of metal.

quick thought most lfs have rows of tanks all stacked up it could be worth asking them who made them.

thanks for the calculations. Ive seen some descent timber today that I think will take the weight of both tanks, plan on making this stand over the next few weeks and then its a search for the second tank. if I use proper mortice and tennon joints, plenty of wood glue and some descent sized coach bolts, then it will, fingers crossed, take the weight. cheers guys. :good:
