We have a new tiger in the tank and a week after buying him he seems to have a white patch by his eye with some redness around it. We have moved it to the small hospital tank and my wife is going to the fish shop to collect what ever medication it needs however it would be nice to have some idea what it is :)

The Web articles which have lead me to wonder if it is Flexibacter are: the original listing: http://www.plantedta...sh-Diseases/13/ lead to a detailed article: http://www.flippersa...flexibacter.htm where there are some striking similarities to the condition (white fluffy look with a red zone around it) however this is the first time that we've had to deal with any diseases - usually they're just dead with no obvious injury or spots etc.

I have some pictures taken last night

Are we in the right area or is there something else?

Thanks

Miles

How does the patch compare to last nights pictures, has it grown any? Columnaris is said to be quite aggressive and should be spreading quite quickly if that is it, is it? Can you put the fish in a hospital tank? What other fish do you have and what are the water parameters?

This article mentions that tiger barbs are somewhat prone to actual fungus infections usually related to water quality:
http://www.allabout-aquariumfish.com/2009/04/caring-for-tiger-barb-fish.html

Doing water changes will help the fish to heal itself. If you can put it in a hospital tank, salt and anti-fungals might do the trick. Watch your other fish carefully as columnaris (if that's what it is) would almost certainly spread to the other fish, whereas fungus would probably stay put.

I don't claim to be any kind of fish expert, just trying to relate what I have read and/or personally experienced.

Thanks for the reply. The patch is only a little bit bigger (might have spread outwards from the fish a little). The fish is in a hospital tank (moved this morning) which is full of water from the main tank. The tank mates are tigers, flying fox, dwarf chain loach and two krib. The fish is a new addition (a much smaller tiger put in at the same time died within 6 hours but I suspect that he'd taken a beating from the bigger fish in transit and acclimatisation as he wasn't "right" from the moment he went in). The water chemistry is very good, the only issue we have is that the silicates are high however we've got some elimination stuff in there for that.

My wife has just come back from the shop with some JBL Ektol which claims to treat both flexi and fungus. Now all I've got to do is work out how to dose it and do water changes at the same time (or transfer some media from the main tank to to hospital one - I assume this leads to the loss of the transferred media?)

Regards

Miles
