My largest Columbian Red Fin tetra (bought him large) has had a dark area along his body for a week or two now. It's a line which almost looks like his spine, sort of a purpley colour. Just tonight I've noticed there are two white fungsy bits protruding from the dark area. The best way I can describe it is it looks like a pussy spot which needs to be squeezed.

I have some King British fungal infection treatment, though don't have a quarantine tank :( I am doing my usual water change tomorrow so I can remove the carbon from filter (anyone know if there's any carbon in the Aquis CF1000 external filter?) and add this treatment. Or will it clear up on its own as long as I keep my water clean? Are my other fish at risk? If so I will try and get a small quarantine tank as I don't want to loose my other fish.

By they way he is acting perfectly normal and ate some food tonight (the Columbians are like Piranhas and eat very quickly!) and is begging me for some more food as I go up to the tank.

Thanks :)

Edited to add: I have been reading a bit about Ich and Columnaris and it doesn't look like he has either of them...

Just to add: my tank is 190L, been running about 2 months now and was seeded with mature filter from old tank (this filter is still in my tank alongside my external). My stocking is in my signature. Water change is due tomorrow, checked water stats last Wednesday or Thursday when I did my last w/c and levels were all 0. I have a few shrimps and a snail in the tank who are fine so I think they're a good indicator of my water quality. Also I change about 30% of the water each week.

Can you issolate the sick fish as it the spots bursts it can infect the whole tank.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

I will go and get an isolation tank today - any recs on size? Th filter I'd be using is an Elite 15 Stingray and I'd have to get another heater.

He's not flicking or rubbing - is acting normal apart from the fungus.

When you buy hospital tanks it depends on the type of fish you keep and how big they are.
Looking at your tank size you could maybe do with a 20 gallon.
If you have a filter match the tank to the size of the filter.

I got a 21L hexagon aquarium - 15" high by Clearseal, which is all I could stretch to. Even buying that at the moment is going to get me in the bad books with OH. But I thought better that than potentially loose all my other fish and I will be able to quarantine any new ones in the future.

Should I put some sand in or not bother? I have a plant I can put in for some shade.

Usually with hospital tanks don't need a substrate.

OK thanks Wilder. I will add the plant is its in a pot.

What temperature would you recommend and also how long before the fish starts to recover - if he does :(

I have bought the Anti Internal Bacterial med you recommended, though I'm not sure how much to add. It says it gives you a chart but the only chart there is is one which calculates the volume of water. It says about giving 2 doses 4 days apart but I don't know how much to add!

Not sure will have to look at mine in the cuboard is it a piplette ful to 2 gals.
Set the temp to the same as the main tank.
When you move the fish match ph and temp.

It should state the ml dosage for the volume of water being treated? Keep the temp the same as whats in your main tank, increase aeation as meds can decrease oxygen from the water.

Add 2 piplette full of the med to his tank.
You have to mix the med in quite warm water to activate the med.
Then you redose in 4 days.

I've been all through the booklet and there is no mention of dosage. It says something about adding aquarium salt and funnily enough gives the dosage for that at 2gm per litre. I don't know if one pipette is one dose - I think it odd there is no mention, or maybe I am being thick. It has it quite clearly on my King British one.

Thanks Wilder. Where does it say the dosage?

On the med bottle at the back.

D'oh - stupid me!

Have you had any success with this treatment?
