Hi my Dwarf Gourami has come down with what looks like popeye in the last 24 hours, how do I treat it?

Also, how on earth did he get it? And is it contagious?

You will need an anti-bacterial medication.
Pop-eye can show up when the water quality is bad.

My water is ok according to my NEW test kits, amonia and nitrite are both 0 and nitrates are somewhere between 25 & 50, it's a bit hard to tell as the colours are very similar. Compared with the old test kit which told me my nitrates were less than 10!

What is in an anti-bacterial medication? I have Aqua Master - Multi Cure - on hand which contains Malachite Green (0.400 mg/ml), Methylene Blue (4.00 mg/ml) and Acriflavine (2.00 mg/ml), are any of these ingredients anti-bacterial?

Well the medication I have used for popeye is Maracyn-TC (Maracyn-Tetracycline). The active ingredient in that is Tetracycline Hydrochloride.

Acriflavine is commonly used to treat "ick". Along with Methylene Blue and Malachite Green. All the medications you have are for fungal/parasitic infections.

Take a look at This! The first section before the "space" is a list of active ingredients for antibacterial products.

thanks very much, but I don't need it now, he's all better this morning! I'll have a look through the list anyway though to see what I can find to keep on hand :)
