On performing my weekly maintence today, I have found one of the neon tetras as developed pop-eye and has no bouancy control.

Im willing to mostly rule out dropsy as there is no other symptoms what so ever relating to dropsy but this fish was not recovering, so i have kindly chosen the "clove oil" method.

the tank is good at:

ammonia 0ppm
nitrite: 0ppm
nitrate: 55ppm (only high as this is water change day)

The tank temperate has fluctuated alot this last week, up to 32C but ive left the air bubbles on 24 hours and the light only on at evening for an hour or two to keep the plants alive. this kept temp to a max of 28C

Would anyone recommend adding some melafix (or other) to the tank as a safety precaution.

tank mates are:

dwarf gourami (x2)
leopard loach (x1)
zebra loach (x1)
neon tetras (x5 now)
flame tetras (x6)

in a 20 gallon tank.

eheim aquaball 2210 filter

I would use an anti internal bactetial med for treating pop eye like "Anti internal bacteria" by Interpet  . Melafix is mostly used for treating things like finrot or wounds.

thank you for the info and the link - though this was slightly different from the pictures in the link, this was actually a case of the eye had "popped" and was now detached from the body, except for a small string of ligature type stuff. the fish was floating near the top of the tank, curled up with no control on bouyancy.

Bless him he sounds bad how he doing.

i popped him into a solution of clove oil n tank water as he was in a bad shape and no chance of recovery.

I have been monitoring the fish tank today and all bar one fish as normal - the one fish is another neon whose colouring is not as bright as normal - almost as if its the first light of day and its still got to brighten up. purchased some interpet anti infection stuff anyway.

Sorry R.I.P. The neon have you added the med that could explain the paleness, if not need water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph, is the colour loss in the red stripe area.
