cheers!

just have to hope the other 3 pull through

have soaked the bogwood in a salt solution for a couple of days now, gonna dry it out now and then put it in at the weekened

Don't forget to rinse the bogwood well before you let it dry out.
Fingers crossed for the other rainbow fish.

cheers, i wont!

i fear it may be bad delivery of rainbows, i use maidenhead aquatics and they are usually very good, however i went back to look at the rest of the rainbows they had left, to maybe ease my conscience that it wasnt my water and there were a few who were gill pumping and breathing near the surface like my poor rainbow.....makes me feel better that it is probably not my water but feel sorry for the rest of them.....

Did you meantion anything to the lfs.
Might of climatised them to fast.

i didnt mention anything.....i kinda went in there to ease my worries as this was my first loss in a while so was starting to worry...is there anything they can do? it seems to me that when they get to this stage of coming to the surface and almost flapping their gills that they die the next day? could it be stress? or travel?

i think if the 2 rainbows make it i will not be buying any more....as i said i have 6 harliquins and will make that a shoal of 12 and then thinking of either 2 keyhole chiclids or 2/3 bolivian rams/ cockatoo chilchlds

I thought it was flapping due to your slight nitrite reading.
If there doing the same at the lfs it can mean
Lack of 02 in the tank.
Bad water quality.
Overdose of meds.
Toxins in the water.
Parasites like gill flukes and other external parasites.
Ph shock.

Constant swimming at surface (dinoflagellates [free-living or parasitic], toxins, pH shock)
Gasping, irregular opercular beat, rapid opercular beat (bacteria, dinoflagellates, parasites, toxins)

Are the fish mouth open.

well that was i thought? the fish was breathing near the surface and pumping its gills rapidly, i did a water test and realised the nitrites where a bit higher than expected only at 0.1, but ammonia was at 0, i thought this was what was making the fish act strangly.....it then died the next day.

To be sure that is was my water i decided to go back to the LFS to see what the other fish looked like as it may have been a 'dodgy' fish that may not have travelled well....to my suprise a few of the other fish where doing the same. This indicates to me the fish may have got ill whilst at the LFS.

The fishes mouths are not open all the time but look like they are gasping

Ok bless them.
If they are not flicking and rubbing it leaves ph shock to bacterial infection.
I doubt it toxins in the tank.

is there anything i can give them? like some sort of magic potion!!

would adding anything like an anti-bacterial medicene do any harm if there wasnt anything wrong with them except maybe ph shock or sensitive to nitrites

You could add a med but it can finish them off if there breathing already bad.
I would increase aeration in the tank if you add the med.
Is your nitrite reading 0 yet.

at work at moment so cant check..but was at about 0 last night...doing a water change as soon as im back....the reason i say almost is that the colour of the result was light pink but kinda half way between 0 and 0.1...so wasnt sure.

I have a fluvial 3+ in there, with the nossle half in and half out of the water create a lot of turbulancce, i also have about 10 live plants in there, oxgyen should be no problem, however i could move the air pump in there if needs be....

so meds are not approved of?

How are the rainbow fish.

Going back there today, will check on the other rainbows when im there but just going to get harlquins today

luckily the third rainbow that was looking very bad, has actually pulled through and has started to eat...so thats good

Ok that's good news then.
Good luck with the harleys.
