My poor little Neptune! I did water change yesterday and he was fine, but when I plugged the filter back in it was very noisy. i opened it up and realised how much I had stuffed it, so I took a little bit of filter sponge out and it stopped making the noise.
Anyway, I was in bed last night, watching my bettas, and I saw Neptune get blown across the tank by the current. Usually there is not much current created by his filter so I don't use anything to stop the current, he always seems happy enough with how it is - and it is barely noticeable. But I guess taking the bit of sponge out must have made the water flow in much quicker and therefore out much stronger. So I jumped up, popped the flow adjuster onto it, and wrapped some tights around it and secured it, making the current very little. Neptune seemed happy then and started swimming in from of it to check it! So i got back in bed and then noticed he was acting up, flaring like mad at his reflection - the back of the tank is mirrored, but neither him nor Baby, who lives in the other side of the tank, have taken any notice of it, maybe cos I put fake plants at the back to cover it up some. Anyway, i got up again to watch him, as i was fascinated. And then I noticed - his tail was shredded! Not nibbled for sure, some of the middle part of it is just stringy now. Baby cannot possibly have got into his side, there is not the tiniest gap in the divider, and there is a condensation tray over the top anyway so no jumping over is possible. plus Baby is the least feisty betta in the world! And there is nothing sharp in the tank either. So i can only presume that either - he got his tail sucked into the filter whilst it was still on super power.... or he has fin rot! Argh! I looked closely and the ends of his shredded tail look a little dark but not black. I medicated anyways just in case, and Neptune seems to be fine, his usual mad self, dancing for food. What do you think? Is it likely that a filter could have done this?? I feel so bad for him. I am not posting a pic, I feel awful and I just can't bring myself to take a pic of him in this state :( It is just his tail though, his fins are fine.

It very possible it was the filter if you didnt notice it until after the filter problem. Keep his water crystal clear as his tail heals to prevent infection and add a bit of aquarium salt and bettafix to the tank and he should heal up in no time!

Neptune still seems fine, phew. I'm gonna do a water change today to keep the water tip top, and will add a little Melafix and aquarium salt. Ho wlong do tails take to grow back? It's shredded down to almost nothing in places!

NO MELAFIX!!! dont use melafix. I highly doubt its finrot unless you noticed sign previously but i highly think it has something to do with the filter.

Tails vary in re-growth but id say a week or 2, my avatar is a pic of my now deceased betta that had every disease in the book with more than half a tail gone. Took about a month for him to grow his back but thats cause he was in a crappy state of being. This pic was actually taken about 2 weeks ago.

Sorry about Neptune's tail. Poor baby. I didn't know not to use melafix. I used it when Fred and Charlie got into a fight, and Charlie's fins and tail were shredded to ribbons. I used it to cut down the chances of infection. This happened in June and Charlie's tail is still not all the way healed, other then a raggedy looking tail, Charlie is fine.

I was told that melafix is not a medicine, it just has things that are good for bettas. When the boys got into a fight thats what somebody told me to use. All I know is Charlie is fine and I used it.

too much melifix is bad for bettas, bettafix is just melifix watered down. melifix also will not cure hard core fin rot, its more like a healing aid.

I just buy melifix, and use half as much.

OK, so melafix is fine if I use half as much then? I don't thnk this is fin rot now, I am sure the tail got sucked into the filter from how it looks.
