was at our local chain pet shop last night to get some food for the dog, but as always went to have a look at the fish & there was an albino cory stuck on a filter by its face which looked like it had the starts of fungus growing on it :grr: & 3 bettas all in different tanks, but tanks that where next to each other so the bettas could all see each other as well. never seen a betta flare before but did last night :grr:  my 9 year old son went & told them about the cory & they got that off. knew there was a reason i didn't get any fish or plants from there. last time i looked they were all covered in white spot

It sounds like Pets at Home near me...

They dont seem to care, there are dead fish in there, white spot, mixed fish ... etc..

I dont get my fish from there, only food, if i cant get it from somewhere else..

I have found the best LFS and its alot closer to me, than another great one i found... So i will be going there from now on for my fish !!

funny enuff it was pets at home. only go for my dog food now & the master test kits cos its cheaper there than anywhere else i seen. did tell the bloke that the cory had the starts of fungus as well, must say he looked kinda sheepish about it

Clariel, is that the one at Rotherham Parkgate? Not only do they have dead fish, but a couple of times have seen them giving 4 goldfish together with a bowl to customers (usually mums with kids).

Is it our job to tell them all the fancy goldfish will be dead in a month. I learnt the hard way a few years ago.

Yes it is that one !!!

I went the other day, for some bloodworm, and had a nosey at the fish, although i dont get mine from there, i did buy 2 Mollies when i first cycled my tank, and they died, they had bulging eyes, etc..im not blaimg pets at home for this, but know i have seen the state of the fish they keep, they could have been ill when i got them without me knowing...

They dont seem to know anything about fish, as soon as you mention fish to the staff, they look at you as if you have 2 heads

The fish are in a poor state, lots of white spot, and dead fishes.... Not good at all !!

In my opinion, i would NEVER by anymore fish from there, they dont look after them !!

same here now, i,ve found a good lfs & the girl i talk to in there even commented on the fact that the little filter i got for the fry tank wouldn't be cycled  never heard any of them going on about having benefical bacteria in the filters before so mostly use that now.
althou going to wales tonight & i've seen another shop in portmadog so gona check out there filters for my new tank :D

I found an excellent Lfs, a bit on the pricey side, but all they sell is fish, tropical, marine, and pond ...

They seem to know there stuff, and test your water etc..

BUT..............

I have found another one even better !! and its much closer to me, i didnt even know the place exsisted, and its been there for 25 years, i went to have a nosey a couple of days ago, and couldnt believe my eyes  So many lovely fish, ones ive never even seen before lol, very well looked after, they had even got the guppies seperated (males in loads of tanks, and females in another) I have never seen this at an lfs before, they usually just have them mixed.

The guy was very nice who owned it, and talked about cycling etc to me, and i bought some bogwood (mopani) i think it was....

I will definately be going back there for some fish, once my tank has fully cycled, and the prices were alot cheaper too...

And another bonus is, they have the Yoyo loaches that i want

sadly everyone can claim a shop like this near them.. it is appauling!! i really think that something should be done about it.. you can't buy puppies and kittens in pet stores, because of the poor conditions that they were kept in (amongst other things) so why should it be any different for fish, ok well not stop selling them, but at least have more stringent rules about how they are kept!!

FISH ARE PEOPLE TOO!!!

It's really quite simple. Put your money where your mouth is.

That local store you really like that has good quality stock? Buy some of your hardware from them too. Yes, it's more expensive, but realize that money is going directly to the care of the fish or into the pockets of people that actually do care about fish. If you really can't afford it, order your dry goods online. Buying dry goods from Pets at Home is just going to encourage them financially to keep selling fish in the deplorable state that they do.

I agree with that.
Although I buy filter media, flakes, ect from Wal*Mart, and been complaining aslong with people, I've come to realize that my Local Wal*mart isn't that bad.
They've been selling bettas on and off, and when I was there last all there tanks were practically empty (except the tank with 4 juvinile oscers in it).
I wounder how long this'll go on.
They did this with bettas. They'll have 0 bettas for a few weeks, then all of a sudden they'll have about 20-30 and then they'll be all gone by the end of the week.
Weird.
Do you suppose thats just how fast they die?

Totally agree. As a matter of fact ive just bought a new hood to replace the old ugly one that came with my free tank. They had one in pets at home for 27.99 and then one in my LFS for 31.50. I was going to buy the one from pets at home but i had a look around the fish in there, and surprise surprise white spot everywhere! Ive told the guy there to stop ordering more fish and get it treated but he wont listen.. Although i feel sorry for the fish i did my business with the LFS because as you correctly said modernhamlet hopefully, less business will make them stop selling fish that they clearly dont care for. So i decided to get the one from my LFS for the extra couple of quid :) . Id advise everyone to do as much business with your LFS as possible because i dont know what half of us would do without them :dunno: :(

well i know where i work have siamese fighters in tanks next to each other due to the fact that when you get so many in its hard not to put them next to each other. as long as they got enough room to swim away from view i dont see the problem....but that poor cory!
