This is the conditions that these poor fish are being subjected to (these bags are their temporary homes until they either perish due to stress or someone buys them) this batch had been kept like this for 1 week along with others in the same plight in different tanks whats worse the free swimming fish in the tanks were male guppies and female fighters..

These pics are but some of a few i confronted anational manager of a large pet store with (others included fish feeding on ich infected tankmates and a 12" pleco living in a tank where by it had to go vertical towards the surface to turn ) i know they arnt nice but really we all need to make it apparent that although other livestock such as puppies and kittens are treat well and look healthy in petstores the fish are also living creatures and respect some form of care and each species nature understood and respected..

Sorry pics were taken on my phone..

Ughhh some petstores really irk me....they aren't planning on releasing all of those males into the same tank are they????

If I were you I'd definatly go back in and check on them. If they look stressed still (which no doubt they will be) I'd complain. As it is....a petstore shouldn't be selling puppies, let alone kittens...to be honest I've never seen kittens for "sale" at a petstore. Available for adoption yes, but... :<

They sell pups for £150 and kittens £90, as for the beta's they are kept in their transport bags for the duration of their stay (regardless if its 2 days or 2 weeks) yes they are stressed but i believe this is the stores intention (they seem to think betas with their gills flarred and fins proud sell better) how many times have you stood in a store and heard people commenting on how wonderfull that fish looks when you know the reason its taking that aggresive stance, belive me i have repoted the entire store for its lack of care to all its livestock. "time these stores started employing trained staff and not offer the jobs at the minimum wage" one day the staff are preparing bugers at Mcdonalds and then the next caring for livestock..

It breaks my heart to see fish kept in these conditions. The sad thing is you see it all too often.
Ther doesn't appear to be any governing body to stop this sort of thing from happening. If it was a dog or a cat being mistreated then something would be done about it and rightly so. Unfortunately when it comes to fish, no matter how much people complain nothing seems to get done.

i was once at this market and i saw a stall selling fish, they all looked soo sickly and dull in overstocked tanks with tiny comunity fish and large predetory fish and no airpumps. about 17 small to medium goldfish were in a plastic bag about the size of a peice of A4 paper. and i heard the owner say to a coustomer, who had just bought them, that she would keep them for her in this state untill the end of the day when th coustomer would come and pick them up. and there were about 50 betas in tiny plastic cups whith about 5cm of water and compleatly sealed lids all stacked up in a pyramids shape. judging by their waste and the algal build up on the sides of the cups they looked like they had been there a while. i was so disgusted at this outrageous display of animal cruelty that i nearly cried.

i wasn't aware pet stores in the UK were still allowed to sell puppies and kittens?! i know it's fairly widespread in the US still.

just keep confronting these places that don't do it right until they buck up their ideas, and don't buy stuff from them, and tell all your friends to do the same.

Check out large stores such as www.petcentreonline.co.uk (aka emersons) and pets at home as i find these two to be the biggest culprits of overstocking and poor care of their aquatic departments and all their tanks usually run from the same central filter so if one tank is infected then you bet your life the rest are. (luckily enough a new store has just opened near me and i dropped by today "the tropical team" it is awesome with some very unusual species (he also has caimen) wouldnt like one in my community tank though lol..

There's one in Leeds that sells puppies etc and it has a fairly large fish section too - I never approved of the puppies and kittens being sold but I was never into fish when I went there, so it will be interesting to see how they keep their fish when I know what I know now...

Some places are obviously more driven by money than others

yeh pets at home is really poor for keeping fish. they dont quarantine their fish at all, they are all sold same day they are received from the supplier so wouldnt know if they had white spot or infections. all the tanks run from the same pump too and fish can jump over to the next tank quite easily too.
u have to be lucky to find someone that knows what they are talkin about working there. in the pets at home i work there are people who will sell someone 15 fish all in one go, and sell big fish to people with really tiny tanks.
