Size-wise, each grains are about 0.5 to 2 mm - this one was taken super close, so the grains may look alot larger than it actually is...
As for the purple color - my previous bulb died on me (Hagen Aqua Glo), so I purchased a hardware store variety one which I hated (really yellow!) and bought so called "Aquarium Bulb" by Penn Plax from Wal Mart. Although it looks better in real life, the photos really come out purple overall!
