I was just wondering wether you can use a small pond filter in your aquarium , most of them have UV filters on them what does this do ?
also can you use plant foods for ponds in your tank (work out cheaper)

Thanks Sarah (hope this makes sense Brain not good today)

A lot of people with big tanks or tanks with big fish in, use pond filters to keep the water clean.
U/V sterilisers kill off algae, bacteria and fungal spores that pass through them. They have to be set up correctly and have the water passing through at a particular flow rate otherwise they are ineffective. Basically you want the water to pass through the U/V unit slowly so the U/v light has a chance to kill everything. If the water passes through to quickly the algae, bacteria, etc doesn't spend enough time exposed to the U/V light and doesn't die.
U/V units are used on ponds to help control green water (free floating algae). They can be used on aquariums but aren't really necessary unless you have a major disease outbreak, or have new fish coming into the tank every week.

Pond plant foods can be used in big tanks. Be careful not to overdose with them.

thaznks for the replis i use tetra plantamin to feed my plants as i've found it pretty good and it doesn't affect my shrimps so i'm going to get the pond one for the 180ltr and 130 ltr tanks as i only usually have enough food in a 100ml bottle to feed 3 out of the 4 tanks (be 5 by tomorrow) and it's expensive

I was only asking about the pond filters as my friend has a 2000lph one that he dont want , it's not much bigger than a 405 fluval so it would fit under my cabinet of my rio and it is still quite quiet , so i think i'll have it off of him for my tank then :)

cheers Sarahx x
