Hey,

I've been cleaning out the pond today, but decided to keep a little culture of shrimps, black mosquito larvae, mayfly larvae, dragonfly larvae, leeches, woodlice looking things, red wiggly things, snails, and many other small things in a bucket.

I was wondering whether they could be fed to either my tropical or coldwater inhabitants, and would I need to prepare them first?

I'm pretty sure black mosquito larvae comes in frozen blocks, but live form would be so much more interesting, and surely better for the fish?

the little red worm things are blood worm and great for the fish, and yes larvae can be fed as well to them but its best getting it from a lfs as its probly much more safe. my grandad always gets things like blood worm and larvea out of his pond for his fish inside, and he says his been doing it for years with out a problem and his dad always done the same also with out ever a problem accuring .

Are there any fish in your pond? If there are I wouldn't use it incase of spreading disease.

I'm after those blackworms though to do my own culture.

If you do have larvae they may well hatch very soon and you will have some Gnat's about the place.

Dragon fly larvae can eat small fish (even if the fish is bigger than it).

Leeches wouldn't be very clever i wouldn't think.

Snails, you could breed and feed to puffers or loaches?

:good:

The fly larvae are excellent. Use them all the time in the warmer months from my water butts (placed near the hedges).
