ok so i got my first tank at x-mas, a fluval du deep 800 or something, now, in the hagen tank setup guide, it states clearly that the tank MUST NOT be put on top of polystyrene and it will invalidate the guarantee...

i did think this a little perculiar and have noticed the odd posting pointing out about their polystyrene under the tanks. also just got a tank off a buddy at work who had polystyrene underneath, so whats going on?!?! should there be or not?!?!

on most manufactured tanks they have a plastic frame on the bottom which acts as the poly tiles would.

Juwel will only give warranty if the tank is on there stands, ehiem say there's no need for tiles if you use there stand, but without there stand use tiles as they don't build tanks with a surround.

If you have to put your tank on a slightly un-even surface, putting polystyrene/cardboard/a towel uder the tank will help distribute the weight of the tank out more evenly apparently making it less likely to crack on the un-even surface.

i would rather take my chance and use the polystyrene  .

I am sure that Hagen wouldn't come running to your rescue if your tank cracks because of the pressure point created by the tiniest little stone you missed underneath when you placed your tank down!! :X
