ive read on here about cleaning filter media in tank water, and not replacing it or using tap water cause of the bacteria.
What about the poly pads? Should they be replaced weekly? less or more?

I did do a search, but it didnt come up with much other than brief mentions.

i replace mine when they get filthy, i just wash the poly pad quickly in a bit of old tank water to get rid of any dust. Hope this helps

:)

thanks :) it never crossed my mind until i started thinking how u can buy everything else so readily, that maybes i shouldnt be buying these to replace them

just realised about the washing that i didn't state that i meant a clean one before it goes in the tank :p silly me! I know what you mean though juwel filters are very effective, but a lot of lfs tell you they need regular changing (just to get more money i think), we were once told to change the blue and green ones every week! mad!

ig ya wanna do sommat special get rid of the standars filter and replace the whole unit lol the jewel filters are rubbish u nee to get somethink like a fulvel 3 or 2 much better

would it be better to replace it, or add another? for even more filtration?

s'pose it depends on how many fish you have/want to have in that tank. I find my filter works really well with my tank, each to his own!

I have just got my first tank up and running (juwel rekord 70) and i was wonderin if you could please explain to me as a noob how the fluval 2 or 3 filter is better than the standard juwel one i have which seems to have masses more media in than either of the fluvals.
thanks :)

Simple thet're not. Nothing wrong with juwel filters they're very effective. You just need to rinse the poly pad out once a week under the tap(give it a good blast) and gently rinse one sponge at a time(as in not in the same week) in old tank water.

You can buy large sheets of the poly pad - I think used for pond filters - which works out cheaper than buying the Juwel ones; they come in varoius thicknesses. Just cut them to fit the filter. I change mine every week. Have a look on ebay.

Nice to read someone (Johnny.t.) have a good word for the Juwel filter :good: Never quite understood the (seemingly) universal slagging off that the system gets.

same here i never understand why people slag off juwel. I have two juwel tanks (one is coming to the end of it's cycle) and i havent had a problem with either of them and for me they are very efficient. Good idea about the sheets of polypad though!

I replace my polypads weekly. if you have only a few fish in the jewls, you can get away with rinsing the pad, but it will eventualy clogg. there is nothing wrong with cuting to fit, the large poly sheets mentioned earlier, they work just as well. Stick to just the standard Jewel filter system, unless you plan to overstock (not recomended by anyone, and I do ont endorse overstocking in any way), as the Jewel filter system are very effective. The only filter pads in the Jewel system the realy needs replacing, is the carbon sponge, as carbon will become exhusted over time.

I purchased a 70L Juwel Rekord in Feb and was abit annoyed to find out that i would have to change the white filter each week especially at fish shop prices.

I went on Ebay and purchased 80 (over a yr & 1/2's worth) ready cut to size, delivered for less than £10.

I suggest u purchase some of them and then change them weekly at very very little cost.
