Hi All,

I am considering adding a Poly delhezi to my current set up.
It it mainly CA/SA Cichlids. The smallest being about 10cm.

How predatory is this Bichir?
What is the minimum size fish that will be safe with them?

From what I have read, they get up to about 30cm in captivity and are fairly active for Bichirs.

Any advice welcome
Thanks

Delhezi CAN get to 14 inches but don't usually get passed 12.

Iv had a delhezi, 3 Senegals and an ornate... All kept with CA/SA cichlids. As an example my ornate was around 9 inches in length before I got rid of it (was being bullied by my flowerhorn). Out of the 3 types of bichirs iv had I would say the delhezi had the slowest growth rate. Iv fed all my bichirs on a good pellet as a staple, bloodworm, frozen fish like smelt and frozen prawns.

The smallest fish in the tank when I had my ornate was a 3 inch (12cm, maybe a little smaller) Jack Dempsey and my ornate at 9 inches didn't bother it at all. I also had the delhezi (around 4 inches) and a Senegal (6-7 inches) and again they didn't bother the JD. Remember this is just from my experience with them and every fish' temperament is different. I would of thought the sort of minimum sized fish that would be safe would be something like an adult Congo tetra... Something along those lines.

The most preditory out of the 3 was definitely the ornate and possible the delhezi 2nd.... As far as how active they are I found my delhezi to be the least active of the 3. They were in a 5 foot 450 litre tank (jewel rio 400). What dimensions is your tank? How many litres? And what other fish do you have in the tank at the moment?

Also make sure your tank has a tight fitted lid as they are excellent escape artists :)

dbanner,

Would you say that a senegal is the most active and least predatory?
Ie the best for a beginner?

(My tank is 5x2x2 approx 550L before displacement)

Yes I would say out of the 3 I had the sen was the most active and least agressive for the size it was. All 3 of my sens have been between 5-6 inches or so in length.

That tank size will be fine for a sen or delhezi or even an ornate... Well at least for a good while anyway.

Finally got the Poly delhezi today.
Hadnt been back to this lfs for a while.
