okay i'm talking about the dwarf puffers here :p

i was just wonderin if the dwarf puffers ould be poisionous if i put my hand in the tank water than not wash my hand not thorughly enough then i go to eat...( :S ) would i get hte puffer's poisoning? :(

btw can dwarfs survive mainly on snails?

I don't know - surely if they leached their poisons into the water (apart from being very wasteful as they'd keep having to make more (?) ) wouldn't the fish they live near in the wild all die off?

I've got an old issue of Practical Fishkeeping on my desk :D which states

"Before you ask - poison is not a danger if you are keeping puffers in aquaria"

and also

"the toxin results from bacteria present in their natural diet and puffers that do not have access to their natural diet tend to be less poisonous, if at all"

No. Puffers are only poisonous if eaten. Dwarf puffer's poison is in their skin but does not 'leak'.

Also, most dwarf puffers are captive bred and captive bred puffers have little or no toxins.

However, it is always advisable to wash your hands after touching fishie water as the water contains all sorts of unpleasent bacteria which could make you rather unwell.

Puffers love snails, but like any creature they need a balanced diet. Feed snails, bloodworm, daphnia, shrimp, chopped shellfish, worms, brineshrimp etc...

Some will take proccesed foods, most will not.
Small ghost shrimp will be taken eagerly once they get used to them swimming around.
