I was trying really hard to puch the air out with the plunger but it didn't seem to be working.

Checked all the usual pipes for kinks etc but everything seemed ok.

Now, I have turned the pump on and it throwing a large bubble out the "in" way every few seconds, i.e. in the wrong direction.

Not sure what to do now as the plunger has snapped off and I don't know what will happen when it stops bubbling? Anyone?

OK, it's not so much an emergency because I got the filter going by some jiggery pokery - turning the filter off and on again several times whilst tipping the unit at 45 degrees. Now the filter is going which is good because it's a highly stocked tank. The bad bit is I had only cleaned the sponges and not the media so it has spewed out crap into the whole tank.

Now I have presumably until next time, to find out how to fix a fluval 405 with a broken plunger. This has really puit me off buying one for my main tank.

Push the lid down onto the canister while priming it.
The one ive got has a slight air leak on the seal and it wont prime unless I push the lid down.
Hope that helps

Do you know if the plunger can be replaced or fixed?

You can buy them direct from Hagen although they're also available on ebay/amazon etc.

You could also ignore it and prime it in the old fashioned messing around with pipes method.

Hmmm, that would have been really useful last night. If I'm to guess, would that mean to de-couple the in-let hose at the top of the tank and back fill the in-let hose by scooping water up? Just a guess?

It's basically starting a syphon. Closing the filter full of water helps a lot, decoupling the intake at the filter and sucking on it is the really old school way.
