Im pretty sure I can but im just double checking. Can you put a pleco with a betta?

Common Plecs get big.

Don't know much except that Plecs are a dirty fish, so good filtration is necessary. That means stong currents. The Betta may have some issues and could wear out young trying to deal with the currents. So you would need to watch to make sure he is not trying to patrol the whole tank, and that he has resting spots on the bottom and at the surface where he can retreat from the currents and possibly bubble nest. The Betta shouldn't bother your Plec, but I don't know about the Plec. Betta needs simular conditions to a gourami, but more so.

what jollysue said.
and as long as you bare in mind that the common plec is going to outgrow the 46 gallon

Common plecs will grow way too big for that tank. You'd be advised to go for one of the smaller types of plec listed here. A plec won't bother a Betta, nor will the Betta bother a plec.

If you check Gothic's profile, you'll see the Plec is a done deal now and  in a 10 gal. So I am assuming that the 46 is the upgrade.

Depending on which exact species of plec it is it will grow to anywhere from 12 inches to 2 feet. It's going to need a 6 foot x 2 foot tank at a minimum. Seriously consider taking it back to the lfs while it's still reasonably small and trade for an alternative smaller plec. They're lovely fish, they just grow huge.

I suppose the lps might buy it back. It has probably grown since it was first purchased.

I Thought 46 gallon was plenty large. And also, I didnt buy the fish, it was given to me. The school libraey had a 15 gallon fish tank and at the end of the year the fish were going to go to the libraians home tank(which is 20 gallon), she already had a pleco so she asked if i wanted it so i took it. To my knowlige its just an every day pleco. It was in the 46 before, but i took it out when my tank got sick(its the surviver, pretty stong fella)

How you came to be looking after the plec is not really the point. Maybe see if you can get a good photo of it and ask on the catfish / Plecos forum here and see if you can get an ID. They'll be able to tell yo how big it will get. If it's definitely going to be too big for your tank then it's really better to see if you can trade it in sooner rather than later.

Unless you like the fish and will upgrade with it.

Still, would be nice to know what to expect with it. :)

True Jollysue.

Sorry if I sounded harsh GothicCandle, it wasn't my intention to say you cannot keep that fish. I intended to let you know how big it gets and what you will need to do in the future if you do choose to keep it. Reading it again it sounds a bit harsher than I intended.

I'm sure the 46 gallon tank will last it at least a few months :) Be aware tho, the larger it is the harder it can be to re-home if you decide you need to. Getting an ID at least would be the way to go so you can decide what to do from an informed position.

Just for refrence, my common plec is in an 80 gallon... with a syno, an oscar and a parrot fish, the tank has 2 internal filters, plus 3 externals,
