Hello, I was in my LFS yesterday and saw some plecos but they looked a bit like stingrays. Could anyone tell me what they are called so I can research them? :)

Thanks!

Could you 'google' plecos and find a picture that most closely resembles the fish? That'd help us A LOT :P I'm sure a more catfish savvy member might know off the top of their head though.

You should try asking here: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/forum/14-catfish/

:) Best of luck!

I think it was this but maybe darker

could it have been a hillstream loach? much much smaller than any ray though.........

Hillstream loach; there are few different species with slightly different colours.

Not a good fish for a 'standard' tropical set up; they're quite difficult to feed and need very highly oxygenated, fast flowing water and a cooler temp than most trops.

i agree with fluttermoth. there not ideal fish unless you really know your stuff and have a dedicated tank to them........dispite what the pet shop say's

Oh yes I should of mentioned it was about an inch. Sorry. :L

I'm not getting one anyway, just a really interesting fish I wish to look up. :good:

Thank you for identifying. :)

They are a gorgeous fish, no doubt about it! I fell in love with them when I first saw them, about 15 years ago, but have never had the right sort of set up to keep them.

Yeah haha I can't really see it being a very interesting tank. Is there any other similar fish as well? That are more tropical? Just out of curiosity.

the fish in the pick is one of the rarer commonly availuble ones called sewellia lineolata. they are by for my favourite hilstream and imo one of the most interesting in the way the behave

Oh right didn't know that. They look interesting. But since I saw this in the warmer tropical section, I can't imagine they were very healthy.

no i bet they werent. depending on your tank size and tank mates banjo catfish are interesting. they are quite flat and broad. they get about 5" though and are nocturnal
