My Pleco has recently started to spasm in the tank...I think he/she may be on the verge of dying. He/she will be fine one minute then start to jump around the tank the next before landing upside down or on its side. Anyone know what's causing this? I think I'll end up buying some new fish with this month's wage...Including the Pleco I have two left and wouldn't like to leave the other fish on its own if the Pleco died.

Can you tell us your water stats please, ammonia? NitrIte? NitrAte, ph?

The tank in your sig is 66 litres is this the tank we are talking about? What fish have you got and how many of each? How long has the tank been set up?

Stats I can't tell you as the tank is technically not mine and I know nothing about it. :/

Yeah, that's the tank. I only have two fish left in it. One is the Pleco and I don't know what the other is. The tank is a couple of years old, I think, and the fish have been in there from the start.

we out stats m8 as minx says then we cant really help you ...wot type of plec is it?

I know, I know...I realised that after I made the topic. Silly me.

It looks like a smaller version of a common plec, to be honest. It's only around 4 or 5 inches in length and has the same markings as a common plec.

if it is a common plec m8 and 2 years old like u say then it should be much bigger than 5inches so going by this i would say he's stunted and this has eventually started 2 kill him/her commons should grow around 10-12 inches in the first 12 mnths any pics would confirm species but i would be pretty sure its the stunted problem 60ltrs is far 2 small for a common plec :( but like i said if pics were shown we could tell you weather it is or not and give u a better idea on the actuall problem :)

Like I said before, it's not really my tank...It's my fiance's mother's but she doesn't look after it anymore and the tank is in my fiance's house. Confusing I know. :p

I was thinking of putting the fish to sleep, humanely of course, but I have no idea of how to do it. Any suggestions?

I'm really sorry if I'm being a pest.

your far from been a pest m8 thats wot were here for 2 help :)

clove oil in cold water is 1 way 2 go other than that ice cubes in water is another way 2 go but i havent tried either on plecs so may take a little longer 2 die than a smaller fish tbh

If you are certain that euthanizing is the only coure of action, then the best way Ive found (although none is best of course) is to get a jug of water, large jug of cold water and put it in the freezer until an ice layer forms over the top, crack the ice and without hesitation, net the fish and place them straight into the water, usually causes death within seconds. Clove oil is another way, but you have to make sure you use the correct amount to the amount of water and size of fish to make sure you actually kill it and not just knock it out.

The quickest and considered the most humane is to cut off the head of the fish or a sharp hard blow to the head, but you have to be precise, no hesitation and know what your doing.

Can you get pics of the the fish, can you do a 50% water change on the tank, adding declorinator as a start rather than thinking of killing them without knowing if they can be saved.
