Plec!

I will have to try and get a picture of my pleco one of these days.

Here's my cheeky chap!

It's a bristlenose yeah, but I am not 100% sure of the sex of my two yet.

If he has bristles all over his face, he's a he. If he has a line of bristles along his lip, or none at all, he's a she ;)

how big/old do the bristles come out?

i have a small one he/shes about 4 inches no bristles yet

sharon

Bristles come along at about 2-3". They get more as they grow, but the first ones show at around that size. So yours is a female :)

Yeah they were so small when I got them. I think I have a male and a female, as one has definitely got more pronounced bristles than the other. He seems to be a little more dominant as well.

Sorry - I was answering Shaz when I said I thought hers was a female.

But I'd say if you have two from the same source, of the same size, if one has more bristles than the other, it's likely you have one of either sex. Females generally only have a row of bristles along their lip, or none at all - so if there's any up the face, then they're probably a male. But really - it's a case of watching and waiting :)

Sorry Shaz was commenting on my picture though so I assumed you were talking to me

Just to back Lisa up on the watching and waiting thing...
I gave my parents a couple of our BN fry a few years back when I rehomed their common plec. They grew to be the biggest BN's I'd ever seen (dad was 4" mum was 3") but the offspring were 6" and FAT. anyway, neither of them had any bristles up their nose so I assumed they were both female, so I gave them a male to try and breed...
It wasnt until there was another male presence that one of the others decided to develop bristles!

They lost the female last week so are now after all this, left with 2 males - :)
