Hi all

A bit new to this so please bear with me.

I have a plec ( sorry cant spell full name) which is about 5 inches in length. I have had him (or her) for about 4 months since i set up my tank. Recently growths have appeared around its mouth. He seems to be eating fine and not losing any weight. I have taken him to here i got him from and the guy hadn't a clue but advised putting some baktopur in the water which i have done (and has coloured the water a lovely green). Has anyone else had this problem with plecs, all help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Sue :D

I have not heard of baktopur before, what does it claim to treat? Can you describe the growths in much more detail like their color, size, texture etc? Are they red and sore looking, cotton-like, slimey looking etc? Are they eating into the skin or growing out of it?

Exra info like how many gallons the tank is, what fish you have in there, do you use dechlorinator on the water or anything else, what are your recent ammonia, nitrite and nitrates test results etc would be very helpful too in helping diagnosing what you plec has :) .

Baktopur is a water treatment against mouth and fin rot and bacterial infections. The growths are growing around the outside of the mouth. They remind me of a jellyfish. they were red a few days ago but seem to have gone back to a creamy colour since treatment.

The tank is 24x12x12. All recent tests have been ok. the tank contains mainly tetras, 2 dwarf gauramis, 2 red finned sharks, 3 shrimps and a couple of water snails.

Any help you could give me would be great

thanks sue :D

Plecs are catfishes (I think )

...

If the growth are red and sore plus fluffy it sounds like a bacterial infection, just want to make sure its not a parasite, any signs of flicking and rubbing, or laboured breathing.

Does sound like a bacterial infection. He seems to be improving they are not as red thanks for all your help
